Being green is in! Not like being frog green, but loving the environment and doing everything that you can to save energy and respect the environment. The federal government has gotten really serious about the environment and offers large tax discounts both for private citizens and for green companies.

Green companies are companies that have decided to leave the smallest foot print possible. They have revamped their manufacturing process so that they have cut back on pollution and waste.

Types Of Green Companies

You can find green companies across just about every industry. A lot of the big car manufacturers have started adopting the green model. Not only is it an environmentally friendly way to do business but it is also bringing in tons of business as well, because the public has a heightened sense when it comes to being green. There are builders both commercial and residential that have adopted this way of doing business and there are all types of manufacturers that have adopted this way of doing business.

There are plenty of options for doing business with companies that are causing less harm to the environment and people are signing up in droves to make a difference. From local markets to the biggest corporations in the world all are trying to make a positive difference and get their slice of the pie as far is business is concerned.

Consumer Controlled Trends

The more demanding consumers become with environmental issues the more companies will respond by becoming green companies. It is a trend that is driven by consumer demands. The more educated consumers become about global warming and toxic pollution the more they are willing to make demands of their product producers and fuel the green trend. It is unfortunate but for some of the bigger companies it is the bottom line that motivates. The more they make the more they are likely to respond to consumer demands, once they realize that consumers are shying away from companies that are not making any efforts that will promote change on their part.

Many consumers have sworn off doing business with companies that are not making the effort to protect the environment and reduce their foot print. Although by far there is not enough outrage quite yet, the demand for green living is increasing and prompting many companies to become green companies.

The earth is in serious trouble and that trouble is only going to get worst, it is important that the businesses that have the most impact work toward becoming one of the green companies.

Green company information can be found all over the internet. Green companies are a step in the right direction for the corporate world and the planet Earth.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that the more design elements that they throw into their business card, the more effective it will be. In fact, studies show that the more simple designs are the ones that people are more likely to hold on to. There are certainly ways to make your card stand out, and a good place to start with this whole process is by browsing through the various templates that are available online. These come in a rainbow of varieties, including flashier models as well as quite straightforward ones.

For a person who has no experience with graphic design and may be unsure of where to begin with the design of a business card, these templates can come in extremely handy. Be sure to find those that don’t involve advertisements or other extraneous material being added to the back of your card as payment. The best templates will have a solid structure set up for where to place the information, and may have unique borders or color schemes to give the business card a unique feel. From there, it is up to you to add in your own personal flourishes.

Thinking about color is quite an important element of design. Colors are so tied to personality and psychology that it’s helpful to think about what type of impact your color scheme will have on the viewer of the business card. For example, red tends to signify power and will give your card an air of authority, while yellow makes a person seem more approachable. These colors can be used in various combinations to provide all sorts of different impacts. If you have no idea where to begin when it comes to choosing a color scheme, it can be useful to browse through the various templates just to gain an understanding of what other people have done with this same problem.

The lettering is the other key component of your business card, and should also be paid a great deal of care. This can make all the difference in between your card looking like an amateur work or something that was designed by a professional. Business card templates can be a great help in guiding you along the path to a bold design that works with the personality of your individual or group business needs. The best method is simply to browse through as many options and different designs as possible.

Buying an established business has many advantages. The business is already equipped with experienced employees to operate it and an existing customer base. It saves efforts required to establish a business in the initial stages and you can focus on improvement of services after buying the business.

If you have decided to buy a business, the following 10 tips will surely help you in making the right decision:

1) Buying a business can also mean buying yourself a job. The business will have an effect on your lifestyle and you need to calculate the returns in comparison to man hours spent while operating and potentially expanding the business.

2) Where to find a business for sale – Businesses for sale advertisements can be found in trade magazines and newspapers or online. You can make inquiries with business advisors or accountants about any potential business for sale in the market. You also have the option of listing your requirement online and receiving notification or alerts whenever a business is listed for sale. An online research for business can also yield good results. You can also learn about pending business sales through business suppliers, competitors and customers.

3) While buying a business, a thorough research has to be done on every aspect of the business. You need to gather all information about the seller and business. The financial claims made by the seller about the business need to be verified. The due-diligence when buying a business should be done with a great attention to detail.

4) Always look at buying a business that interests you. They say ‘do what you love and you will never work a day in your life,’ the business must also offer a return on your investment.

5) Check if the seller will offer any vendor finance. Bank finance for buying a business can be limited.

6) Always seek professional advice from accountants and lawyers who have experience in business sale.

7) Do be mindful that the asking price of the business is not necessarily the valuation price or even close to the correct value.

If you happen to seek advice from a Business Broker, keep in mind that they are usually working for the seller (they work for the person that pays the commission)

9) Find out what is motivating the vendor terms and conditions can be just as important as price

10) Educate yourself on the buying process, learning how businesses are bought sold and valued its essential to make sure you achieve the very best outcome for you and your family

The Buying process is really quite straight forward. All you need is the right information and high quality tools.

It is very important to gain expert advise from people who have actually been in business and have experience buying, selling and valuing businesses. Some Business Brokers may be of assistance but essentially they are working for the Vendor and have limited understanding of Business Valuation. A professional Business Valuation Practitioner will be able to offer you an accurate business appraisal….at a pretty hefty cost.

The simple fact is, you can get a great deal without the ‘middle men’ and save thousands of dollars doing all the due diligence, analysis and appraisal yourself, as good as or even better than the professionals for the outcome you dream of.

Following the success of their first book, The Oz Principle: Getting Results Through Individual & Organizational Accountability, Roger Connors and Tom Smith take their readers to the next level with their second collaborative book, Journey to the Emerald City: Achieve a Competitive Edge Through a Culture of Accountability. While the The Oz Principle shows the importance of self accountability in achieving goals by using the characters from the Wizard of Oz, this time Connors and Smith explore the direct relationship between a company’s culture and the results it produces.

The authors have successfully laid down a step by step guide on creating a corporate culture that is more accountable thus removing workplace issues such as the blame game and low morale, which are predominant among companies with low accountability. The first sections of the book teach leaders on how to evaluate and examine the company’s existing culture. And from then on he or she should be able to manage and change this culture in order to achieve a culture of accountability.

Connors’ and Smith’s unique approach to creating a culture of greater accountability is what makes Journey to the Emerald City handy for any leader. To stay loyal with the book’s theme, each chapters starts with a quote from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book also has diagrams to better help the readers understand the concepts discussed in the book and also filled with success stories from a number of companies who have enjoyed tremendous changes after successfully creating a culture of accountability.

Recently I attended a government contracting event and was the lucky winner of a copy of “Win Government Contracts For Your Small Business, authored by John DiGiacomo and James Kleckner. I have found this book to be an excellent guide to helping me stay focused on locating federal contracting opportunities.

Here is a sample of excellent insights into government contracting to get you motivated to “take the plunge”.

Who are the Top 10 Federal Agencies (in number of contracts and total dollar amounts)? Department of Defense. Department of Veteran Affairs. Department of Justice. Department of Health & Human Services. Social Security Administration. General Services Administration. Department of Agriculture. Department of State. Department of Interior. Department of Treasury.

Did you know that 70% of all government purchases are for micro-purchases ( sums under $2,500) and are completed with a credit card? The biggest credit card users are in the Department of Defense and the Veteran’s Affairs, who account for almost $9.9 Billion. Why is this information important to you as a small business owner? You need to be able to accept credit card purchases from your website.

Is there real opportunity for small business owners? Yes, many one-owner companies have gone from modest sales to multi-million dollar sales in niche areas. The SBA 8a program is just one way to get into federal contracting as a small business owner.

Is your company ready to do business as a federal contractor? The book offers a checklist that includes topics such as: Business Size, Financial Capability, Quality Assurance Program, Office Efficiency, EDI and Ecommerce Capability, Internet including a Company Website.

What is the FAR? The FAR or Federal Acquisition Regulation is considered to be the ultimate reference book for all rules governing contracting processes. You should have a basic knowledge of the FAR before attempting to do business with the federal government.

This book contains an extensive glossary, form templates and a comprehensive list of contacts and websites to get you up to speed on federal contracting.

Please feel free to copy and share this article with other people. Part 2 of 2.

Change according to Kaufman, comes with time and leads to structural alterations and the assembly of new alliances. Statistical probability must be recognized as a contributor to success or failure in organizations.

The ability to withstand change is reduced by the over committal of resources to produce specific outcomes. Resources and diversification are linked. When diversification is used to counter environmental threats costs are incurred in resources and unity. Over time, the ability to generally apply resources throughout an organization increases the chance for survival. Changes are also initiated in the overlapping jurisdiction of organizations.

Organizations use various devices to develop member loyalty. Time, adjustments to roles, and maintaining the status quo lock people into established modes of behavior. The resulting instilled behavior patterns exacerbate problems. Conversely, these same attributes, under opposite circumstances would increase the chance of success. In organizations with strong centralization, the diversity of sub organizations diminishes to create more stable internal environments. However, in these organizations failure anywhere in the web of relationships causes problems everywhere.

Kaufman’s analogy of organisms and organizations recognizes that evolutionary differences are appropriate for different environments. Organizational traits such as sexual reproduction, reasoning and multiple memberships are appropriate for environments characterized by gene variations.

The traits of asexual reproduction, strong biological bonding and self contained physical components are advantageous in stable environmental niches.

For both groups evolutionary adaptation becomes increasingly complex with time. When organizations die they release attributes into the environment that merge with other attributes. Member turnover facilitates the transfer of skills and specializations and development takes different courses.

The synergism of different skill levels suggests trends in organizational development. However, these trends are best recognized only after they emerge. The more we understand the relation of different environments and organizations the greater the chance to proactively manage change. Chance interaction within organizations challenges speculation. Chance, according to Kaufman, is a major factor in organizational success because no other specific factors have yet to be isolated.

The conclusions presented here are reminiscent of the phrase that statistics don’t lie, statisticians do. In the postscript Kaufman states that he believes his hypothesis, if not refuted will stand up well when tested against specific competitors. Within the reality imposed by the covers of this book, his writing does have a relevance to the social applications of organizational behavior.

I strongly feel that Kaufman’s omission of historical references and or case studies has minimized the practical applicability of this book for public managers. Since public sector management encompasses daily planning and goals in conjunction with long term planning and goals, documenting the daily changes for a year end synthesizing of facts may reveal trends and or situations that can be compared to or remedied by the information in this book.

Future publications may refute or strengthen Kaufman’s book. Each idea of Kaufman must be considered as an augmentation to the tools used by public managers to manage in dynamic environments. We make decisions based on the best information available at the time. Conditions change, are unpredictable, and our responses sometimes end up causing more problems than they solve. Though not a very optimistic observation, still a valid one.

It’s often said that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Well, it turns out you can’t always judge a book by its title, either.

At first, I dismissed James Humes’ Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln, assuming it would be full of historical platitudes and anecdotal stories rather than actionable advice. Instead, I discovered a terrific reference tool for novice and seasoned presenters alike – including me.

Each of the 21 chapters in this surprisingly quick read offers solid advice for enhancing your presentation skills, using examples from some of history’s most powerfully memorable speakers. Author Humes knows his stuff – this author, professor and speechwriter for five American presidents is a noted authority on the speaking habits of Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Ronald Reagan, and others.

Focusing on what the author calls “21 Power Secrets”, Humes provides the tools to electrify discussions and persuade and capture any audience’s attention. Three of his secrets – Power Pause, Power Point, and Power Reading – are techniques that I’ve found over the course of my 25-year coaching career to be consistently challenging for even the most experienced presenter, yet critical to every high-stakes presentation.

Here are some of the author’s tips to integrate into your own preparation:

Power Pause
Most speakers begin by offering thanks and appreciation for the opportunity to speak. Don’t! Before saying a word, take the time to look directly into the eyes of your listeners. Greet them with a warm smile, then slowly deliver your opening sentence – knowing that every moment you wait strengthens the impact of your opening words. This power pause draws the undivided attention of your audience and leaves them better prepared to listen to your message.

Power Point
No, we’re not talking about slides! Hume’s power point is the bottom line key message you want to leave with your audience. If you want to be heard, understood and achieve results, you must first “stop, think and plan” your power point. As Humes suggests, determine what you want your audience to do and craft your presentation accordingly.

Power Reading
It’s one of the cardinal rules of effective speaking…never let words come out of your mouth while your eyes are looking down. Looking down disconnects you from the audience and means you are speaking at them, not to them. Mastering the skill of power reading means looking down to see the text, looking up – all the way up – and pausing, then conversationalizing the phrase you’ve just recorded in your mind. Although this technique may feel awkward at first, with practice it will become second nature.

Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln supported many of the proven tools in my coaching arsenal, and gave me some new tips for reinforcing them in the minds of my clients. Try some of James Humes’ 21 secrets and forge more powerful connections with your next audience!

Organizations are described as collective groups of people facilitating cohesion within defined borders by accepting specific entry requirements within their borders. These borders can be interrupted either internally or externally. Once the borders are open death can occur, according to Kaufman.

Member attrition, the inability to manage resources and personality dissensions (suicide) are symptoms of impending problems. Organizations may or may not be self-sustaining and normally engage in exchanges of mutual benefits. Additionally, sub organizations can develop that promote special interests. Changes in the environment, as stated by Kaufman, influence the reduction of factors necessary for survival.

Perceived inequities in the exchange of benefits, member turnover and the resistance to change contributes to an organization’s death. Rates of change, according to Kaufman, are not constant and may be visually imperceptible, yet have a cumulative effect.

As decades change so does the homogenous composition of the organization. Within the overlapping environment of organizations are influences that affect the support, will, and intent of organizations. One of the greatest threats to organizational longevity is other organizations.

Changes associated with the expansion of boundaries empower organizations to redefine managerial structure and substitute activities required to achieve goals previously sought prior to border expansion. Internal and external threats are managed by increasing the levels of centralization.

Subsequent attempts to increase immunity from external threats while solidifying influence over members increases the chance that influences will compete and clash. Required adjustments and strategic calculations are designed to match cumulative environmental changes.

Attempted changes are often carried out in a manner that negates effective change. Consensus building is hampered by zero-sum posturing among members. Personal biases filter the reception of quality decisions which may or may not be acknowledged by members.

These conditions increase internal volatility. Covert resistance brings organizations closer to the situational threat than to solutions proposed. Figuring out adjustments is never easy even though failure to adjust accounts for organizational failures. So, how do organizations continue?

Change according to Kaufman, comes with time and leads to structural alterations and the assembly of new alliances. Chance and probability supersede the influence of personnel, talent, leadership and available resources. Additionally, statistical probability must be recognized as a contributor to success or failure.

The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson is a must read for all who are looking for a competitive edge that will catapult their businesses to success in 2010 and beyond.

In my day I’ve read many inspirational and motivational books, but none that have directly impacted my business and my life as dramatically as this short, easy read.

As we enter into a new year and decade, what better time to take stock of the level of success that you’ve achieved? Are you ready to discover strategies that will help you create a proven competitive edge in all that you do?

As we leave 2009 in the dust and venture into a new decade, are you ready to seize each and every moment, find the true secrets to success, and create the changes in your life that will bring you the abundance and joy that you deserve?

I guarantee that The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson will put you on the right path.

The Slight Edge brought me many ah ha moments. A few of the concepts that most inspired me include,

It’s easy to do the right thing every day. It’s also easy not to do it.

The success or failure we ultimately achieve is a direct result of our daily actions that are compounded over time to put us on a path to either greatness or defeat.

Those who choose to remain within their comfort zones can go along happily for many years, but eventually find themselves very uncomfortable, either emotionally, physically, or financially.

Those who choose to venture out of their comfort zones will obviously experience some discomfort initially, but over time will achieve a much greater level of happiness, health, and prosperity as a result.

Most people spend their entire lives worrying about what others may think about them, however very few of the people they spent their lives worrying about will truly mourn when they are gone.

The greatest golden nugget that I received from The Slight Edge revolves around the concept of compound interest. Most of us are aware of how quickly money can grow when compounded on a daily basis, and Jeff Olson points out that the same principles can be applied to our daily activities as well. When we consistently make choices that are good for our health, emotional well being, business, etc. we usually are not rewarded with amazing, life changing results in that day or in the next day, or maybe even in the next month. But, when we do so on a daily basis, the positive actions we take on a daily basis always compound to create desirable results in our lives.

Let me give you an example from my own life. More than once, I have begin a regiment of improving my eating habits and exercising every day. A week or two later, when my pants are still tight, I’ve given into the voices in my head that tell me how much I want to eat a brownie. It’s only one little brownie, and really, will it make any difference? And it looks so good and I’m so hungry.

You can probably guess the rest of the story. One brownie leads to ice cream, and off I go. A couple of days later I’m telling myself that I have no will power and will never be a size 7, so what’s the use. That painful and time consuming exercise routine soon goes out the window as well. Great example of the slight edge working against me.

If I had continued my healthy eating and exercise routine, it may have taken a month or two months or even longer, but eventually my actions would have resulted in better health and a more fit body. This illustrates a case of the slight edge working in my favor.

Simply put, every action we take will compound over time and create a result that will either work to benefit you or hurt you. Our daily choices are just that, choices, and when we truly understand the principles taught in The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson, it becomes easier to make the better choice.

After reading the book, I have a much better grasp of the concept and do believe it will give me the slight edge that will help me to reach my weight goals.

Check out a couple of my favorite quotes from the book:

“The right choices and the wrong choices you make at the moment will have little or no noticeable impact on how your day goes for you. Nor tomorrow, nor the next day. No applause, no cheers, no screams, no life of death results played out in Technicolor. But it is precisely those very same, undramatic, seemingly insignificant actions that, when compounded over time, will dramatically affect how your life turns out.”

“Gigantic funerals are held and great crowds, sometimes entire nations, mourn for those people who spent their lives not worrying about what others thought.”

The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson

Wishing you a healthy, joyous, prosperous New Year!
